Stop being stiff necked and start loving foreigners!

"....do not be stiff-necked any longer. For the Lord your God....shows no partiality....He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the foreigner residing among you, giving them food and clothing. And you are to love those who are foreigners, for you yourselves were foreigners in Egypt." Deuteronomy 10:17-19

It is no secret that much of the conservative Christian community in the USA is vehemently opposed to immigration. Media outlets and politicians have fanned the flames of fear, hatred, and resentment against those from other cultures who have come to the USA. How are we to respond? With Scripture. We need to see God's view on foreigners.

The reality is that we live in a world of migration and immigrants. People all over the world are on the move - not just in the United States. We also need to realize that this is not not new. As we see in the verses above, over and over again in the Bible, we read about the vital importance of caring for widows and orphans. What we tend to forget is that in many of those same passages, we are also commanded in the same breath to welcome, protect and yes, even to provide for the needs of foreigners.

There have always been Peoples on the move. How should Christians respond to the peoples residing among us in our land? According to the verses above, by loving them, and helping them, for the people of God have been, (and continue to be) foreigners in a strange and hostile land.
